Toney Atkins comments: Another big piece of my personal history apparently has died. The once bustling cotton mill and bleachery (formerly known as Crystal Springs Bleachery) operated 24 hours a day, and it provided most Chickamaugans with jobs and rental homes. My parents, grandmother, several aunts, uncles and cousins all worked at the plant during the time that I was born and until at least a few years after I was graduated from Gordon Lee Memorial High School. I was employed there as a laborer in the bleachery and then in its laboratory for two years before deciding to attend college. Except for the period of his service during World War II, my father worked at this heartbeat of the town most of his life. A few years after he retired from a supervisory position, he returned to the plant to work as a security guard. Many if not most of my friends and classmates lived in the "mill villages" that were built by the operation, one on either side of the lake that was spawned by crystal clear underground springs that flowed from a cavern just south of downtown. Learning about the business' closure saddens me, but it makes me happy to know that the small town of Chickamauga and its citizenry live on.
TONEY ATKINS: WHAT I THINK ABOUT THAT: The City of Chickamauga
TONEY ATKINS: WHAT I THINK ABOUT THAT: The City of Chickamauga
This sleepy small town in northwest Georgia will be part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga during the War Between the States. A must for Civil War buffs!
Toney Atkins comments: Anyone who wonders why I've posted so much about Chickamauga, GA, doesn't know that I proudly call it my home town. I grew up there, graduated from Gordon Lee Memorial High School and later enjoyed some of the best years of my life teaching many terrific youngsters in grades five through seven at Chickamauga Elementary School (1967-1971). After teaching another year at North Rossville (GA) Elementary School, I vacationed in Florida, where I essentially was handed my first job in journalism, starting as a police reporter, progressing to the government beat, entertainment writer and editor and then to county and assistant city editor at a mainstream newspaper. I lived in Chickamauga for 29 years and occasionally still yearn for the good old days of small town life where the living was relatively carefree, moved at a leisure pace and full of Southern hospitality. I'm amazed at how much of the town/s history that I wasn't taught when I lived there, but learned about recently. Maybe my teachers tried to inform me, but being a typical kid, I simply took for granted the atmosphere as it was then and not that every day, I was walking on or driving through a land that was jam-packed with history. The upcoming observances of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War excite me and I want to share that excitement. If you want to visit a small Southern town steeped in history, I encourage you to see Chickamauga. (Did you know that the Civil War battle was named not for the town, but for Chickamauga Creek? The area was known as Crawfish Springs during the War Between the States. A crystal clear spring flows from an area just east of the Gordon-Lee Mansion, a plantation built before the war which still stands an historic landmark. The water from the springs flows into Chickamauga Creek.)

By His Own Measure, John Boehner’s Congress Is Still The Most Counterproductive In History: pHouse Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) raised eyebrows on Sunday when he responded to criticism that he is running the least productive Congress in history by suggesting that House Republicans should be “judged on how many laws we repeal,” rather than pass. Through gerrymandering, the GOP won a 234 to 201 majority in the 2012 elections [...]/p

Spanking linked to obesity later in life, study says
Spanking linked to obesity later in life, study says
From MSN Now
Toney Atkins comments: No wonder I am obese and suffering other health problems! I'm only just entering my so-called "golden years," and I was blaming my ailments on that. Now I know I can blame my late parents. Seriously, both of my parents spanked me. Most of the time, I deserved it, and spanking mostly just hurt my pride. I learned a lot from spanking discipline -- not beating or hitting on or about the head (literally abuse and shameful), but my butt withstood a few hickory sticks and hand slaps. Let's face it. Most of today's parents are wimps and the kids rule the roost, with little genuine discipline.

As I admit on a post on Toney Atkins: What I Think About That, the premise was ridiculous, but I may be forever mentally stressed because I didn't stick with it past the first commercial. What next? "Snakenado"? "Bugnado"? "Spidernado"?-"Godzillanado"? "Only-People-With-Few-Functioning-Brain-Cells-Will-Watch-This-nado"? Perhaps folks watch this fare only for huge breasts and bulging pecs and biceps, and I suppose they can be forgiven. Then again, we can laugh at the badness.

IN A DANCE OR EXERCISE MOOD?
Disco isn't dead to folks who still like to get down and shake their "groove thangs" to classic dance hits or walk to the beat while exercising. I don't recommend "Prancercising" to these numbers, but I'm certainly not one to judge if that's what gets you on the floor. Bring back memories of the days when you could walk into a club with a disco ball, strobe lights, unusual smoke, amyl nitrate and sweating bodies boogieing the night away in a total party atmosphere. Check out my personalized Slacker Radio station featuring dance music, funk and some rock thrown in for good measure. You'll hear my exclusive playlist or other songs by artists based on that list at
http://slacker.com/r/lpP7q .
Join me as I remember my dance club and house party DJ days when I was also a karaoke host known as "Toney A."
